Bureau d'echange

More griping on the state of the baby furniture market in this country: The quality is terrible! Everything looks the damn same! And they charge an arm and a leg for their mass-produced crap. It's all made of particle board bound with formaldehyde-laden glue, and covered with either an espresso or antique white cheesy finish that ends up chipping off several months in. Our solution: Craigslist. My favorite website ever, and the source of most of our past and current furniture, Craigslist has again proven a treasure trove of inexpensive, high quality older furniture. We bought this old walnut dresser from a woman one town over for $50. It had been obscured by several coats of old paint...so Chad has been working diligently down at the Ladow garage with stripper and his putty knife. Take a look at the gorgeous shape of this thing. It's the perfect height for a changing table, plus has ample storage for all manner of baby gear in the huge drawers. We plan on finishing it with old-fashioned flat black milk paint. Add changing pad and we're ready to go! More later as we work toward completion...

Ah hell, that's what I want to be doing! I just learned that EVERYTHING we use, wear, and breathe has formaldehyde in it. Smart and sustainable, huh?

Scary, no? But don't use 5F5 to strip paint off furniture unless you're okay with losing like three fingers to toxic burns. That stuff is nasty!
