Big Night Out at L'Espalier

We decided a couple weeks ago to live it up while we still could. So we donned our best duds, had our neighbor Julian snap these pics, hopped on the train, and headed for the fanciest restaurant in town. Three hours later we stumbled outside, too full to walk back to the train. We hailed a cab and marveled at what we'd just accomplished. The meal: hors d'oeuvres of smoked salmon napolean in a buckwheat crepe with chervil; amuse bouche of poached sea bass cheek, heirloom tomato, and truffle; warm salad of haricots verts with frizzled prosciutto, croutons, and a coddled egg; almond-dusted sauteed sweetbreads on an open-faced "grilled cheese"; mint and cucumber soup with creme fraiche and grilled shrimp; foie gras with roasted nectarine glaze, pickled shallots, and toasted brioche points; Muscovy duck breast over scallion johnnycake with blackeyed peas and fresh watermelon; roasted saddle of Vermont rabbit with herbed gnocchi, wild mushrooms, and rabbit kidney and liver; cheese plate consisting of seven artisanal cheeses with plum puree, apricot puree, and honey with toasted pine nuts; wild berry souffle with dark chocolate sauce and fresh mint ice cream; sweet corn meringue with shortbread and balsamic reduction; an assortment of petits fours. Dear god. This was the most decadent meal ever. Thank goodness for our gift certificate and my old friends at L'Espalier who took great care of us.
